Be@rbrick Royal Selangor (Arabesque Black) 400%

Introducing the BE@RBRICK Royal Selangor Arabesque Black. Coveted toy manufacturer MEDICOM TOY has once again teamed up with Malaysian pewter maker Royal Selangor. The Special Edition 400% Arabesque Black BE@RBRICK ROYAL SELANGOR celebrates the language of steel engraving, a technique associated with fine metalwork, and most customarily associated with the elaborate scrollwork on iconic weaponry of 19th century America and Europe.

Hand-assembled with moving joints, the surface of the BE@RBRICK is replete with curvilinear arabesque motifs derived from the elaborate steel engraved scrollwork of 19th century America and Europe. The intricacy of the design is brought out through staining and time-honored techniques. In earlier centuries, arabesque patterns of sinuous branches, leaves, or ornate lines abstracted from natural forms decorated illuminated manuscripts, walls, furniture, metalwork, and pottery. 

Since first appearing in Tokyo in 2001, the BE@RBRICK, a cartoon-like figure of a bear, has acquired international cult status. Released by MEDICOM TOY in a variety of materials and sizes, and with contributions from a host of international collaborators, the figure embodies the intersection of contemporary notions of art, style, design, and fashion.
